Helping Minorities Thrive in Business
School and Beyond
By Dr. Phyllis Scott Buford, Chief
Executive Officer, The Consortium for Graduate Study in
Management
The
Consortium for Graduate Study in Management The Consortium for Graduate
Study in Management is a partnership between graduate business schools and top
corporations and foundations dedicated to providing management education
opportunities to Hispanic Americans, African Americans and Native Americans.
Over the last 32 years, the program has turned out thousands of graduates who
have gone on to significant positions in American business ó many to
work for the Consortiumís own corporate sponsors.
Founded in 1966, the Consortium awards fellowships that allow
minorities to enroll in MBA programs at one of its 11 member universities.
Geographically and philosophically diverse, these large and small, public and
private institutions boast some of the nationís top business education
programs.
Once
admitted to a member university, Consortium Fellows are offered merit-based
scholarships that cover full tuition and required fees for more than two years
of full-time Masterís Degree study at that university. One Consortium
highlight is the three-day orientation program, where Fellows interact with
corporate sponsors and university representatives. This provides a
special networking opportunity. For the 1997-1998 school year, 355 Consortium
Fellows received approximately $5 million in scholarship aid. These Fellowships
are funded in part by the more than 150 leading US corporations that serve as
Consortium sponsors.
Since
its inception, the Consortium has increased the number of new Fellowships it
offers ten-fold ó from 20 to more than 200 annually. Today, there are
more than 3,000 Consortium alumni holding a broad range of public and private
sector jobs. Many have moved into management positions in major US
corporations, some have become entrepreneurs, others have obtained law degrees
and still others have gone on to earn doctorate degrees and teach in business
schools.
As
chief executive officer of the Consortium, I take a personal pleasure in
watching our graduates go on to succeed in the business world. While the
assistance we provide them plays a crucial part in this success, the energy and
commitment these brilliant young people bring to their studies plays the
largest part.
