Denny's Offers a Diverse Menu of Opportunities for Hispanics

No matter where you travel in the U.S., when you're hungry and you see a Denny's sign off the freeway, you are compelled to exit the highway. Why? Denny's Restaurants have built a reputation of serving good, reasonably priced food, day and night, for nearly 50 years. Even abroad, homesick Americans have found Denny's to be a warm, gentle reminder of home. Denny's began humbly as Danny's Donuts in Lakewood, California in 1953. Today, Denny's is the industry leader in the full service segment of family-style restaurants. There are over 1,700 company owned and franchise restaurants operating in all 50 states except Rhode Island, as well as Canada, Guam, Puerto Rico, New Zealand and Singapore.

While Denny's is totally committed to the satisfaction of its guests, the company realizes this can be accomplished only through employees with the same level of commitment. As part of the Denny's team, you will have opportunities for both personal and professional growth.

Both on the corporate and franchise level, Denny's employees have opportunities to reach out to their communities. For example, Denny's is the largest corporate sponsor of Save The Children. Since 1994, Denny's has contributed more than $4 million to further the work of Save The Children in the US, which focuses its efforts on meeting the needs of "at-risk" youth by supporting community-based after-school programs. More than half of the funds are invested in programs that serve minority communities throughout the U.S.

Denny's is also a corporate sponsor of the Harlem Globetrotters. During the 1998-1999 season Denny's donated 11,000 Harlem Globetrotter basketball game tickets to Save the Children and other children's charities, enabling disadvantaged children nationwide to attend these entertaining events and pre-game basketball demonstrations. Additionally, 300 youth received complimentary admission to a five-day Harlem Globetrotters summer basketball camp held in various cities across the country, compliments of Denny's.

At the close of second quarter 1999, 97 minority franchisees, collectively, owned 308 Denny's restaurants, representing 38 percent of all Denny's franchise restaurants. Minority employees represent 32 percent of Advantica's (Denny's parent company) management. As a subsidiary of Advantica, Denny's is part of a reciprocal trade partnership with the Hispanic Association on Corporate Responsibility (HACR), a coalition of national, community-based organizations that monitor corporate performance in key areas of employment, procurement, governance and philanthropy. Hispanics currently represent 24 percent of Denny's 40,000 employees and ten percent of management staff. In 1999, Advantica was ranked No. 6 on Fortune magazine's list of "The 50 Best Companies for Asians, Blacks & Hispanics," following an extensive survey of 1,200 companies.

Area Manager Robert Acevedo

Robert Acevedo is an area manager for Denny's. An eight-year employee of the company, he supervises eight Denny's in Orange County, California, from San Juan Capistrano to Huntington Beach. "My duties include protecting the brand by implementing company standards," Acevedo explains. "I hire and train restaurant managers, who in turn hire their servers, cooks and other staff."

Acevedo was born and raised in Mexico and graduated from Orange Coast College with a degree in business administration. He's married and has a daughter in high school and a son in junior high. Being bilingual in Southern California is a definite plus. "Being bilingual makes me more effective in what I do," he explains. "I always look for the most-qualified candidate, but the pool of bilingual managers is very small." For college students today, Acevedo advises, "Be ready to work hard, be persistent and never give up."

Denny's is currently recruiting for Area Managers, General Managers and Restaurant Managers. If you are interested in a career with Denny's, please fax your resume to: (864) 597-7457 or mail to: Human Resources Department, C/O Denny's, 203 E. Main Street, Spartanburg, SC 29319.
