East Los Angeles College

East Los Angeles College has an international, multicultural student body that complements the 14 communities comprising its primary service area. The college offers both academic transfer courses which prepare students for admission to four-year colleges and universities and occupational programs which prepare students for careers in two years or less. Many of the students who transfer from East Los Angeles College to a four-year university move on to nearby California State University Los Angeles, or to the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA). The college is located in the suburban community of Monterey Park, California, ten miles east of downtown Los Angeles. Enrollment in classes is open to all regardless of previous education level.

East Los Angeles College has an enrollment in excess of 16,000 students; it has the third highest enrollment of Latino students in a post secondary institution in the United States; the student body is over 70 percent Latino; and, there are over 20 percent Asian Pacific students. East Los Angeles College boasts of a high transfer rate to four-year intitutions and is notable for its special academic programs such as the Jaime Escalate Math Program. It is renown for the Vincent Price Art Gallery which has an impressive permanent collection donated to the college by the late actor Vincent Price.

The Associated Students Organization emphasizes social and cultural programs representative of the varied student body. Campus clubs have open membership to students who are members of the Associated Students Organization. A computer center in the Student Activities Center offering Internet access to ASO members was recently opened and has quickly become a popular gathering place.

Occupational Programs

The College offers programs designed to meet the needs of those students preparing for employment after two years of study. The student can obtain two years of occupational education in a field that he/she chooses. The student may also choose to continue a course of study begun in high school.

 

Degree Progarams

In order to obtain an associate in arts or an associate in science degree you must complete 60 units or more of degree applicable units which include general education and major requirements.
