Internships, Community Outreach Expand Diversity
Beyond NIST's Borders
NIST offers several internship programs for students. The National Science Foundation Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) is an outstanding activity where students with a serious interest in science can spend a summer working side-by-side with leading NIST scientists. SURF students write and present papers on their research. They receive a $4,000 stipend for the 12 weeks (or $3,000 for a nine-week session) in addition to travel and housing allowances. Some may even find a position at NIST after they graduate.
NIST also participates in the Commerce Department's Post-Secondary Internships program for students who want to concentrate on a future career in science or technology.
