Faces of Diversity is his latest international social art project, an anti-bullying initiative which he has launched with CharlotteMecklenburg Schools. It aims to spark dialogue and sensitivity among students, staff, and community through an artistic process. Gil creates a large artwork in recycled glass using his propriety paint techniques featuring the face of one student. The student is chosen based on his/her life’s story which is used to create a narrative behind the artwork. This narrative is attached to the artwork via a QR code. The story and artwork is then used to promote the department’s mission to support the cultivation of positive school experiences while promoting safe learning environments free of bullying and harassing behaviors. Both the story and artwork will be displayed at various locations across the Charlotte region. The ultimate goal of this project is to raise money to complete a series entitled 10 Faces of Diversity. Thanks to generous contributions; three of the 10 faces have been funded. This project will also be expanded to include professional development opportunities across the community. “This project allows students of many different backgrounds and viewpoints to express themselves and understand each other through a visual representation of diversity” says Gil. “In addition to cultural awareness and unity, Faces of Diversity demonstrates the power that carries one story and the visual arts to create sensitivity among the participants. I’m thrilled to partner with Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools for this exciting project and look forward to interact with the students” Recently, it was announced that Gil would use SherwinWilliams colors in a partnership with them to complete community art projects in Charlotte, NC Gil will unveil his Faces of Diversity project on October 4 at ImaginOn, 300 East 7th Street, Charlotte, NC.
